A Message to the 2012 Graduates of the SCV

Each year around this time, the Santa Clarita Valley says goodbye to some of its best and brightest young people. Some graduates trek off to begin the next chapter of their lives at college. Others find incredible opportunities nearby and get a jumpstart on their careers. And others take a much needed break from the daily grind of scholastics and take off to explore the world around them.

Whatever the next step you should decide to take, we hope you’ll go forward proudly representing those things that are so intricately woven into the fabric of life here in the SCV:

  1. A giving spirit
  2. Commitment to being a good neighbor
  3. Total awesomeness

Sometimes graduates from the SCV return to their hometown and bring with them newly acquired gifts, skills and talents – and we love it when they do!

We hope you won’t stay away from home for too long and that you’ll come back to visit occasionally. Congratulations to all the graduating classes of 2012 on a job well done!

It’s the Kickoff to Grilling Season!

Memorial Day weekend kicks off grilling season – and who doesn’t love a good barbeque? Family vacations, numerous holiday weekends, swimming at the community pool every day – this is the time of year when some of the best memories and friends are made.

Aside from the regular summer fun waiting around the corner, there are also some very special occasions we celebrate as a nation, including the Fourth of July, Labor Day and the fast-approaching Memorial Day.

Shortly after the Civil War, Americans began to hold springtime tributes to remember the fallen soldiers who gave their lives for our country. Today, Memorial Day often symbolizes not only the fallen but also the men and women who have sacrificed their time and talents for the safety of our nation.

Here are five facts about Memorial Day you may or may not know:

1. Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. This is because of the practice of decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers.

2. The South refused to recognize Memorial Day until after World War I. After World War I, the meaning of Memorial Day changed from honoring civil war dead to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

3. New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day.

4. Red poppies are considered to be the Memorial Day commemorative flower.

5. Memorial Day was first declared a federal holiday in 1971.

Now, if you’re searching for the perfect way to spend your Memorial Day weekend in Valencia – look no further! Here are a couple of recommendations to get your grilling season started.

1. Join the Santa Clarita community at the 24th Annual Memorial Day Celebration to celebrate, honor and remember America’s heroes who gave their lives in the line of duty. This celebration also includes a flying appearance of the AT-6 planes of the Condor Squadron and more than 5,000 American flags placed on the graves of veterans. Lunch will be served following the ceremony.

2. Bring the whole family out to the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center and enjoy the dive pool and waterslide pool on Memorial Day from noon to 5:00pm!

Whatever way you choose to kick off your grilling season, remember to be safe, buckle up, designate a driver and eliminate distractions while on the road. We hope everyone has an awesome Memorial Day!

It’s Getting Loud in Awesometown

There has been a saying running around Valencia. Maybe you have heard it? “Rock the rhythm. Beat the odds.” There’s only one thing this could be…a chance to break the record with the largest drum circle while supporting your community!

This has been a yearlong endeavor brought together by 7,200 sixth and seventh graders, 4,000 people from the community and celebrities like John Densmore from The Doors, Teddy Campbell from American Idol Band and Eric “E-Panda” Hernandez, known for his work with Bruno Mars and Taio Cruz. Their goal is to hammer, pound, beat, hit, slap, bang and make their way through history.

At 11am on Friday, May 18th at the College of the Canyons Cougar Stadium, watch as legendary drummer from The Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart, starts off this drum circle. Funds will raise support and awareness for the PAC K-12 Arts Education Outreach Program.

If you want to get involved without having to sacrifice your hearing, you can donate money or sponsor a drummer. But we suggest that you come out and be a part of this fantastically loud event that will blow your mind!
